Education Extends to 12th Grade
Washington Times Op-ed by HSLDA President Michael Smith
Sept. 10, 2007

This back-to-school time of year is different for homeschoolers because most homeschoolers do not follow the traditional school schedule, nor are their children sent "back to school". For parents educating their own children all the way through high school, it's even more true, because one of the hallmarks of homeschooling teens is the flexible schedule. But is homeschooling through high school desirable?

Social Worker / Truancy Officer?
Are you Prepared?
From CHEF of Lafayette Feb. '07 Newlsetter:

(An incident from one of our CHEF families.)

About five years ago, while living in New Iberia, the Boyd family had just returned from an early-morning
shopping trip, when Jodie sent her son, Drew, to check their mail. Their house was set back from the road,
but Drew, then 12 years of age, often got the mail unattended. He was escorted back to the door by a truancy
officer with Iberia Parish School Board who asked why Drew was not in school. Jodie explained that they
homeschooled their children, and the officer insisted that it was against the law for a child to be outdoors
without a parent during school hours. The officer left, but returned again with a copy of statutes. Jodie tried
again to explain that the statutes did not apply to home educators. The officer also asked to come inside to
use the phone and to see their home schooling paperwork. Jodie contacted HSLDA for guidance, but the Boyds
were not members at that time. Fortunately, there were no further visitations by the officer.

Tips for Handling This Situation
1. Always get the business card of the social worker or truancy officer.
2. Find out the allegations.
3. Do not let them in your house without a warrant or court order.
4. JOIN Home School Legal Defense Association.
